Bobcat vs Bear: Competition over deer carcass
«

Tuesday night, I got one of the neatest series of pictures since I have been running trailcams in five years. I drug a road killed deer to the camera location, and I placed it against a small tree and covered it up with grass and dirt. This bobcat came in and laid at the carcass feeding on it for about an hour. Then the cat got up, and he was on the alert and appeared to be watching something.
In this picture you can see the deer covered up by the tree.
These pictures were taken by a homemade trail camera. The camera is a Sony W200 12.1 mega pixels. You can do some serious cropping on these pictures and still retain high resolution. These are two cropped pictures of the alerted can as he appears to be watching something. This camera also has an adjustable flash, and I was running the camera on 20% flash. The camera needs very little light to take quality pictures, and I like the low-light pictures instead of flash washed out pictures. The camer was set 6 feet from the tree.
35 seconds after the last picture above was taken, it becomes obvious what the cat was watching
The first thing the bear did was to dig up the carcass

The flash in this picture picked up the glare of the bobcats eyes. He is just downhill in the brush watching the bear eat his deer
The bear decided to come over and check out my camera and get it bloody
Finally, the bear left, and the cat returned to the carcass
But the bear came right back and chased the cat off of the carcass
When I checked my camera the next morning, there was blood on the camera, and the carcass was nothing but hide and bones. I could hardly wait to see the pictures.

300rum, I have had this camera set at this location for over two weeks, and I have over 2,500 pictures of the bobcat. I have been using deer guts and parts from hunters around here to get pictures of the bobcat. Monday night, a deer was hit on the highway by our mailboxes. This was the first night for the deer and the first night this bear showed up.
bow4elk, Here are some pictures of my homebrew that took these pictures. I bought the camera used on ebay for $100, and I have another $65 in the control board, case and other parts.
